Description
This donabe "hot pot" is made in Japan. The design is an ivory base with black crackle pattern. This earthenware vessel is used to make "nabemono" in Japan, a warming one-pot meal popular during the winter. Traditionally, a portable stove is placed in the center of table, and the pot is filled with broth and ingredients. There are many different variations of nabemono. Broths can be as simple as water flavored with a little bit of dried kelp, to more assertive flavors made with chicken and miso. Once the broth is made, ingredients are added. Ingredients often include seafood, poultry, pork, vegetables, tofu, and udon. Nabemono is meant to be eaten as a communal meal, where diners sit around the table and pick food directly from the pot.

Very nice pot. We went on a little Japanese "Hot Pot" binge this past winter and this pot was perfect. Unfortunately the instructions for the pot are in Japanese. In particular, it wasn't clear whether you can put the pot directly on the stove. Fortunately my son is taking Japanese in high school and his teacher translated the instructions for us. Yes, you can put it on the stove as long as it's at least partially filled with liquid.

This is wonderful way to share a meal! You will also need a portable single burner, easy to find (buy extra fuel canisters). You can follow recipes or you can simply prepare all your favorite vegetables and meats or seafood for individual or "mass" cooking in (our choice) chicken broth. Add cooked rice or noodles last to absorb all the flavor left in the broth! Simple and fun!
